Safe driving is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Many drivers and car owners take this for granted, but they don’t realize the importance of responsible driving in ensuring the safety of themselves and everyone else who uses the road. To help you avoid unwanted injuries and accidents, take note of the following road safety tips every driver should follow.
Always check the condition of your car
Whether you’re out for a long drive on a weekend or taking a quick drive to work, checking your car’s condition before leaving the house is imperative. Always take the time to check the basics – oil, tire pressure and brake fluid. Also see if the mirrors are properly tilted, if the air filter is clean and if the brakes are tight.
Put a seatbelt on
This may sound really basic, but putting on a seatbelt is something that many of us ignore. Wearing a seatbelt is extremely helpful in ensuring your own and your passenger’s safety during a car collision. It helps reduce stress on any body part because it spreads the impact over a wider area of your body. Also take note that when you put on a seatbelt, the risk of fatal injury during an accident is reduced by more than 40 percent.
Don’t drive when drunk
A lot of vehicular accidents are caused by drunk driving. When you have too much alcohol in your body, your senses tend to weaken which leads to car accidents. If you’re heading to an event or a party where alcoholic beverages are served, it’s better to either take a cab or make sure to control your drinking. It may not be as convenient as bringing your own ride, but just imagine the fatal consequences you may have to face when you drive under the influence of alcohol.
Multitasking, at home and at work, can make you more productive. However, it’s strongly discouraged when on the road. Avoid all sorts of distractions possible. From your mobile phone, loud music to a talkative passenger, make sure that your focus is on your driving. Texting while driving is one of today’s top causes of road accidents. If you must reply to a message or answer a phone call, be sure to pull over. It may take away a little of your time, but at least it doesn’t take away your life.
Use your turn signals
Turn signals are there for a reason so use them whenever necessary. When changing lanes, taking a turn or backing up, these signals help warn other fellow road users of your next move. This way, they can react accordingly.
Observe traffic rules
You can never go wrong by following traffic rules. It may not always be the most convenient thing to do, but it will help ensure road safety. Just imagine how things would look if everybody on the road observed traffic rules.
Avoid driving when drowsy
Car accidents because of drowsy drivers is not new. Vehicles collide, swerve off the road, smash structures or worse, bump pedestrians. Prevent this by making sure you’re getting plenty of sleep. Succumbing to sleep even for just 2 seconds can be disastrous.
If you think you can’t keep your eyes open for long, pull over and take a nap.
Even if the traffic is very light, be sure not to overspeed. Always drive at moderate speeds and follow the speed limit. Also, be sure to slow down when the road is slippery or when turning at a blind curve. Monitor your speedometer to make sure you’re moving according to the prescribed speeds.
Maintain a safe distance with the car ahead
You’ll never know when the car in front of you is going to make a sudden stop. Therefore, the best thing to do is to keep a safe distance behind them instead of closely tailing.
You’ve got nothing to lose by practicing safe driving. It may not be the fastest and most convenient thing to do, especially when you’re in a hurry to get to your destination, but it will help reduce accidents and save lives.
